Quivira Elusive

Disclaimer: I paid for this so I might want more/less from it

Tonight’s pick for pizza pairing was a Quivira Syrah blend called Elusive.  An exciting nose of strawberry, grape jelly, and a hint of cinnamon.  On the palate fruit then what I call oregano, leather, and finally earth for a dry finish with soft tannins.  For the $28 price point I would say worth it.  I should mention this is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mouvedre, and Petite Syrah where the first three varietals dominate the blend and are very typical of a Rhone blend.  Petite Syrah, however, is not a usually found in the Rhone though.

  1. I always used to cringe at paying too much for blends (and I’m not talking $28, think Super Tuscan prices), but I really have tasted so many in recent years that are just excellent. I know, I know some of the best wines are blends, my wife always teases me. I like the percentages on this one. It sounds just wonderful. Weekly pizza night does too.

  2. It was definitely one of the fruit forward California wines though it did bring some nice complexity as well. It was a pretty good choice for pizza night.

  3. Thanks for the recommendation. While I am somewhat fatigued by the big fruit forward California wines, I am always on the look out for a good blend.

  4. My husband and I are just beginning to appreciate and take note of wines but the variety is so vast that we have stuck to Australian, French and Italian wines. I am loving reading your take on some of the Californian wines that I have lots of access to in Singapore but know nothing about – thanks !

    • Wow, thank you so much for leaving such a nice comment. So interesting how global things are. Hard to believe somebody in Singapore found my little entry. I will have to make sure I cover more California wine! I’ve been trying to be balanced 😉 given my California bias. Glad to meet a fellow wine traveller.
